Army Commander Craft is a strategy-shooter hybrid where you fill both the command role and the frontline combat role simultaneously. As commander, you build and upgrade your army between engagements — recruiting soldiers, improving their equipment, and fortifying your base on the island battlefield. As a combatant, you lead your army directly into nervous shooting battles against enemy forces, aiming and firing alongside your troops rather than watching from a command map. The dual role creates a layered progression. Army composition decisions made in the build phase — how many soldiers to recruit versus how much to invest in per-soldier upgrades — shape the difficulty of the combat phase that follows. A small but highly upgraded army fights very differently from a large lightly equipped force, and discovering which composition suits your personal playstyle is part of the early game appeal. The island setting provides natural defensive terrain that smart commanders exploit. Positioning your army on elevated ground or behind natural cover reduces incoming fire effectiveness while maintaining your army's outgoing accuracy. Enemy forces approach in formation, and breaking up those formations with strategic early fire — targeting the formation edges to cause flanking confusion — is more effective than engaging the densest part of the formation head-on.
