Lode Retro Adventure is a 2D pixel puzzle-action game inspired by the classic Lode Runner formula, where collecting gold is the objective and outsmarting monsters is the challenge. Each level presents a fixed grid of underground tiles loaded with gold coins and guarded by purple monsters that patrol the tunnels. Your tool is a shovel that digs holes in the ground tiles on either side of you — and a well-placed hole is both a trap and your primary survival mechanic. Monsters that walk into a dug hole get stuck temporarily, giving you a window to collect gold from above or navigate past them safely. But the window isn't permanent — a trapped monster climbs back out, and if you're standing directly on top when it does, you're caught. Timing how long you keep monsters trapped while still grabbing as many coins as possible is the puzzle layer that distinguishes clean, efficient level clears from messy, improvised ones. Golden bananas appear in some levels as bonus collectibles that inflate your score well beyond what the coins alone provide — they're optional, but chasing them almost always means taking more risks with monster positioning. Each level has a minimum coin target you must hit before the exit opens, so there's always a baseline objective alongside the score-chasing side goals.
