How to Win 2048: The Corner Strategy and Number Merge Tips

🔟 6 min read · Updated: November 1, 2026

The number 2048 sounds easy to reach until you try. You slide tiles around a small grid, equal numbers combine, and every move adds another tile to a board that fills up quickly. Moving at random will rarely get you past a few hundred. With one simple rule, however, reaching far higher becomes routine, because 2048 is much more about order than luck. This guide explains that rule, how to recover when it breaks down, and how the wider family of number merge games differs.

How 2048 works

The classic game uses a 4x4 grid. Each swipe slides every tile as far as it can go in that direction, and two tiles of the same number that collide combine into one tile of double the value: 2 and 2 make 4, 4 and 4 make 8, and so on. After every move, a new low tile appears in an empty square. If the board fills and no neighbours match, the game is over. Reaching a single 2048 tile counts as a win, but you can usually continue beyond it.

The corner strategy

Almost all strong play rests on one idea: keep your largest tile in a corner and never let it move. Choose a corner, say the bottom left, and build outward from it. That gives the highest number a permanent home where new low tiles cannot land beside it and get in the way.

  • Choose a corner and commit to it for the entire game.
  • Mainly use only two directions, such as down and left, to keep tiles pressed towards that corner.
  • Use the third direction, right, when you need to, and only when your bottom row is full so that it cannot shift.
  • Avoid the fourth direction, up, unless there is no other legal move. It pulls your biggest tile out of the corner.

Keep your tiles in a chain

The corner by itself is not quite enough. The tiles next to it should also descend in order, such as 512, 256, 128, 64 along the bottom row. Then, when a new 64 is built next to the existing 64, the whole row collapses in a satisfying chain into the corner. Many players extend the same order up into the next row, going back the other way, in a pattern often called a snake. Getting this right means that one good merge can set off several more.

Do not merge everything you can

Not every available merge helps. Before swiping, check where the new tile will land and what it will do to your order. Sometimes a small merge elsewhere keeps your chain intact, and that is worth more than an immediate gain.

What to do when a low tile gets stuck

Sooner or later a small tile will land in your top row or corner area. Do not panic and throw your structure away. Slowly feed that tile matching numbers, building it up until it can merge back into the chain. If your largest tile does leave the corner, and an up move sometimes forces that, return it on the very next move if possible, before a new tile takes its place. A little patience here will rescue many games that look lost.

Number merge games to try

The merging idea has spread into many variations, each with its own tactics. 2248 Number Puzzle replaces sliding with chains: you connect matching numbers on a larger board, so finding long paths takes the place of the corner method. Drop & Merge 2048 has blocks falling through five lanes, and you pick each lane, which gives it a touch of arcade timing. Number Merge Master has you dragging matching tiles around the grid to keep merge chains running, and Cube Merge merges adjacent cubes automatically once you place them, so everything depends on where you put each one.

Tips that work across merge games

  • Keep similar numbers near each other. Merges only happen when tiles meet, so grouping is half the battle.
  • Fight to keep empty space. Once a board is almost full, your choices vanish very quickly.
  • Handle low numbers soon. A scattering of small tiles clogs the board faster than a few large ones.
  • Look at where new tiles come from. In drop games especially, knowing what comes next lets you prepare a lane for it.
  • Slow down when the board is crowded. Most games have no clock, so there is no reason to hurry the moves that matter most.

Is 2048 skill or luck?

Both, though skill counts for far more than it first appears. New tiles appear in random empty squares, so you cannot control everything, and an unlucky drop can occasionally spoil a good position. But a player using the corner strategy will reach 2048 on most attempts, while someone swiping at random almost never does, which is a pretty strong sign that skill does most of the work.

In short: pick a corner, keep your order, and be patient. That is really all there is to it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best strategy for 2048?

Keep your largest tile in one corner, mainly use two swipe directions, and arrange the tiles beside it in descending order so merges chain together.

Which direction should I avoid in 2048?

The one that pulls your biggest tile out of its corner. If your corner is bottom left, avoid swiping up unless nothing else is possible.

Is 2048 based on luck?

There is some luck in where new tiles appear, but strategy matters far more. Players using the corner method reach 2048 much more often.

Can I play number merge games for free?

Yes. 2248 Number Puzzle, Drop & Merge 2048 and others run free in your browser with no download.
